Zig-Zag Man Tattoo

In the nineteenth century, during the battle of Sevastopol, a Zouave (a soldier in a French infantry unit) had his clay pipe broken by a bullet. He got the brilliant idea of rolling tobacco in a piece of paper torn from his bag of gunpowder. By so doing, he invented the world's first CIGAR. RETTE. For one hundred years, as a tribute to that soldier, the image of the Zouave dressed in his bright uniform has been used on all Zig-Zag's cigarette paper products. In modern times, the Zig-Zag man has also come to be associated with MARIJUANA and a whole subculture of people that roll their own.

Zipper Tattoo

A zipper design is a bit of tattoo irony, suggesting that, like clothes, the wearer's skin might be opened with a tug on the slider. It is particularly linked with surgery, where the skin is actually opened. From a cesarean section to open-heart surgery, the zipper has been popular placed over scars, and if open sometimes shows the interior of the body, much like a MOCK WOUND.

Zodiac (Chinese) Tattoo

Like the Western ZODIAC, the Chinese version is also divided into TWELVE symbols. These, however, do not correspond to cycles within the year but instead to a long cycle of twelve years. Every year the zodiac sign will change, and every twelve years it will repeat. These are the signs and their years: Rat 1912 1924 1936 1948 1960 1972 1984 1996 Ox 1913 1925 1937 1949 1961 1973 1985 1997 Tiger 1914 1926 1938 1950 1962 1974 1986 1998 Rabbit 1915 1927 1939 1951 1963 1975 1987 1999 Dragon 1916 1928 1940 1952 1964 1976 1988 2000 Snake 1917 1929 1941 1953 1965 1977 1989 2001 Horse 1918 1930 1942 1954 1966 1978 1990 2002 Sheep 1919 1931 1943 1955 1967 1979 1991 2003 Monkey 1920 1932 1944 1956 1968 1980 1992 2004 Rooster 1921 1933 1945 1957 1969 1981 1993 2005 Dog 1922 1934 1946 1958 1970 1982 1994 2006 Pig 1923 1935 1947 1959 1971 1983 1995 2007

Zodiac Tattoo

The zodiac is the chief organizational structure by which the cosmos is understood in astrology. In Babylon, Judaea, ancient Egypt, Persia, India,Tibet, China, North and South America, and Scandinavia, astrologers utilized the zodiac. The symbol is a circular shape with divisions around the rim that correspond to the TWELVE constellations. The astrological aspects are dependent on the angular relationships between planets and STARS in the SAY and their relationship to references based on the earth. Each constellation or zodiac sign has biological and psychological significance in terms of interpretation. Taken as a whole, the zodiac is an outstanding example of a complete cycle that still reveals the interrelatedness of its parts.

Zuni Fetish Tattoo

Zuni is a pueblo in New Mexico, near the Arizona border, and the source of an interesting and small sculptural item called a fetish. Although many groups in the American Southwest may have used fetishes, it is the Zuni who have achieved a reputation for producing finely carved examples. The most famous of the animal forms is probably the REAR, which nearly resembles a crescent in profile. Lashed to its back with twine is sometimes an arrowhead or perhaps a tiny bundle of turquoise or coral, an offering to the animal spirit. Native Americans believed that a spirit could reside in a fetish, a power that could be used for good or ill. That power was one that had to be cultivated. Fetishes could belong to the tribe, a clan, and also to individuals who would ritually feed them and keep them in protected places.
