Mack Truck Tattoo

Unlike the HARLEY-DAVIDSON logo for bikers, truckers don't generally sport just a logo in their tattoos. Instead, the actual truck itself is the main element of the design. It might be interpreted as a work-related tattoo but the dramatic scenes and settings for these truck images and the detail given to their individual characteristics likely imply something more. Big and powerful, polished to the brightness of the SUN itself, these trucks and their tattoo images seem more an extension of the self than simply a picture of a work vehicle.

Madonna and Child Tattoo

In Coptic Christian tattoo art, the MADONNA and Child is a very popular image, as it is in most Christian art. In her long flowing robes, she carries the infant JESUS in the crook of her arm and they both wear crowns. This type of image became more popular after her title "Mother of God" became prevalent in the early centuries of Christianity.

Madonna Tattoo

Madonna ("my lady") is a name given to the VIRGIN MARY when she is portrayed in a devotional and portraitlike way, as opposed to illustrations of her at historical points in her life (the annunciation, the birth of Christ, etc.). Although there are many types of Madonna images, especially the MADONNA AND CHILD and the PIETA, many Madonnas in tattoo art depict her standing alone, in long flowing robes, with her gaze cast downward and arms spread open in protection and blessing. Surrounded by a HALO and rays of light, she is beautiful yet regal, perhaps sad herself but still comforting and always serene.

Makah Sea Wolf Tattoo

The Makah area NativeAmerican group wholive on the northwestern tip of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. According to the mythology of these ocean-faring people, KILLER WHALES are actually WOLVES that have gone into the sea, hunting gray whales in packs, as wolves would. The image was one that resonated with the Makah, skillful whale hunters themselves, and it was given representation in various different art forms, including tattoos.

Mala Tattoo

The Buddhist mala (Sanskrit for "rose" or "garland"), like the Catholic ROSARY, is a string of beads used to count recitations. And, like the rosary, it is sometimes seen as a tattoo, worn about the neck. The purpose of the mala is for the counting of mantra or prayer repetitions. The long mala worn about the neck or wrapped around the wrist many times is 108 beads long, related astrologically to the twelve houses, multiplied by the nine planets of the solar system. Sometimes a slightly larger 109th bead, called a guru bead, is added to terminate the count, accompanied by a tassel.

Male Symbol Tattoo
The symbol for the male sex is taken from the astrological symbol for the planet Mars, which is in turn associated with the Roman god of the same name, whom the Greeks knew as Ares. Mars was second in importance only to Jupiter himself, the chief of all Roman gods, and he represented the spirit of battle and was essentially the god of war.
